Mrs. J.W. Stow journal, 1865-1891.

This holograph diary was possibly begun September 1, 1865, when Stow left New York City by ship; she arrived in San Francisco September 24. A voyage from San Francisco to New York, begun January 9, 1866, is also described. The volume includes passages relating to her husband, J.W. Stow, and her real property, and poetry and short essays by Mrs. Stow, as well as addresses of acquaintances, genealogical data , quotations, book lists, recipes, and clippings from Shakespeare and Dickens.

Marietta Lois Beers was born in New York state about 1835, a daughter of Wakeman Beers and Lois (Louise) Wood. At 19 she married a Cleveland, Ohio, merchant named Bell; he and their only son died within the next five years. After the death of her second husband, San Francisco businessman Joseph Washington Stow (1874), the women's suffrage leader wrote Probate Confiscation (1876) and Probate Chaff (1879), as well as editing the periodical Woman's Herald of Industry (San Francisco), 1881-1884.
